Kit - Rigid Heddle Limited Edition "Sea Slug Silken Splendor" Silk Scarf Kit

Price: $89.95

LIMITED EDITION Rigid Heddle "Sea Slug Silken Splendor" Silk Scarf Weaving Kit  (uses 12 dent heddle)

"Slugs" may sound unappealing, but Sea Slugs have amazing colors! Peg MacMorris, a biologist and weaver, was inspired by gorgeous blue & yellow Chromodoris annae

This project is featured in Handwoven's Little Looms magazine, 2020 issue, pages 38 and 54.

Peg designed the scarves using plain weave with "crammed dents" to create the lovely ribs.  Peg selected the stunning, shiny Glasera* reeled silk yarn for extra under-water shimmer.

Inspired by the delicate wavy edges of Chromodoris annae, Peg also created a soft curve at each end of the scarf--a unique technique that fits this scarf perfectly.

To help you get started quickly, we have created a kit for you--you can purchase the "yarn only" (no instructions included) or you can purchase the yarn with the Little Looms magazine, which includes the threading plan and instructions.

Your Limited Edition "Sea Slug Silken Splendor" Silk Scarf Kit makes a lovely 100% silk scarves using our luscious, natural and hand-dyed 100% silk bombyx yarn.  Your kit includes a total of 135g of dyed silk:

--  40 yds (11g) of Glasera*, natural white

   --  40 yds (10g) of Alirio-Thicker, hand-dyed color #4 "Rendezous Blue"

--  10 yds  Serenity (reeled silk), color #36 "Sun Dance"

And, as a limited edition kit, once gone, these silk kits are retired forever

Glasera is an absolutely beautiful yarn, but it’s best to have smooth hands when handling.  Ceclia Quinn, our spinning expert, says:
"It is a good idea to smooth the rough spots on your hands by using lemon juice, sesame milk or a good hand lotion, otherwise the fine cobwebs of silk will catch in every crack!  Any good hand lotion helps if used frequently.  Fresh squeezed lemon juice applied to the hands when the silk starts to snag again have worked in my classes."

My personal notes:
--sugar scrubs are wonderful for exfoliating your hands.
--some hand lotions can leave a residue on your hands that ultimately sticks to the silk.  You may need to wait 10-15 minutes after applying hand lotion.  I find a bees-wax based lotion bar works here for my favorite lotion bar***oops...we are out and I'm checking with my artisan supplier to see if I can get more.
--because both Glasera yarn and Serenity thread are “slippery”, we recommend winding a ball by hand (solid center).  However, I find it’s quicker and easier to wind the small 10 yard and 40 yard skeins onto a business card or index card folded in half.
--if you're in a dry climate and your silk starts to "fly" due to static electricity, I rub an unscented dryer sheet over my hands (not the silk) and that reduces the “flying”.
