Kit - Weaving - Limited Edition "Knotty Macrame" Silk Scarf Kit
LIMITED EDITION 4-Shaft, Silk Scarf (or Scarves) Weaving Kit
Featured in Handwoven magazine May/Jue 2017 issue (p 42), this macramé knotted silk scarf was inspired by an ikat Mexican rebooz scarf and the impetus originated with Anita’s vision for the fringe.
When challenged to design “faux ikat” with 4 shafts, I looked to Color and Weave effects—and my favorite resource is Margaret B Winderknect’s Color-And-Weave II book. Dreaming of spring’s rebirth, I selected natural white, blue and green colors to interpret the draft on p35 (2-18).
The next step was passing off the silk yarn and draft to Charlotte Updike, who wove it, leaving an extra long 18" fringe. Then we mailed it to Anita Osterhaug to knot the fringe, creating macramé magic.
We know some of you like to weave and not spend time on the fancy finishing...so you can weave the entire warp (no fringes) to make two infinity (or mobius) cowl scarves. After weaving, cut your silk in half, put in one twist and then sew the ends together--tah da--you've finished one of the infinity scarves! Repeat the twist and sewing for the second scarf.
Woven on a 4-shaft loom with our most popular silk yarn, Kiku, this 28 EPI twill color-and-weave scarf is a fun to weave and finish. The perfect spring or summer wrap to wear at weddings, reunions, or an evening under the stars.
Designed on a 3.25 yard warp, your Limited Edition Knotty Macramé Silk Kit makes 1 macramé knotted fringe scarf or two infinity (fringeless) scarves, and includes:
--820 yds (75g) of natural white Kiku (20/2 spun silk yarn)
--515 yds color #405 "I Can't Believe It's Not Indigo" Kiku (20/2 spun silk yarn)
--185 yds color #312 "Sprout" Kiku (20/2 spun silk yarn)
--print out of additional macramé knotting instructions from WeavingToday.com
Optional: Handwoven Magazine M/J 2017 with instruction on pages 42-44

This scarf has a special place in my heart. Handwoven magazine contacted me about the project in November 2016, the weekend I was in Iowa, learning about Dad's terminal cancer diagnosis. Planning this scarf made me feel "normal" and the springtime colors gave me hope while my world was changing around me.
Dad knew about the project and was happy to know life was moving forward, even though his was ending. He never saw the finished scarf, but I think of him each time I see it. And smile with happiness that I was lucky enough to have him as my dad.
