Reeled silk filaments are too fine to be woven with no twist.  The 'throwster' takes several silk filaments, assembles and twists (throws) the silk to create a reeled silk yarn that is subtantial enough for weaving or knitting. 

However, when things go wrong in the throwing mill and fibers tangle around the machine or are otherwise unable to be used for finished yarns, they become thrown silk waste or Throwsters Silk.
