Silk/Cotton Combed Top/Sliver in Salt Spring Island Limited Edition colorway - 'Chili Spice' 25g
Salt Spring Island - 25 Gram - Limited Edition Chili Spice
Hand-Painted 55% Silk/45% Cotton sliver
We dye for silk, so the cotton in this blend retains its white color, giving a lovely heather-y look and softer colors when spun. We rinsed multiple times, but the cotton still has a bit of 'dye stain'. When you wash your spun yarn, the water will have some color still. It's the loose dye molecules on the cotton--not the silk.
This silk/cotton blend has a short fiber length (1inch to 1.5 inches). Spinner Kim used a walking wheel (aka great wheel), using low tension spinning off the point. Kim loved spinning our silk/cotton blend--and she confessed that she typically doesn't enjoy spinning cotton! The 55% silk in our blend made the difference. Kim believes that a chakra or small Russian spindle would also give great results with this short fiber length.
Note: Because of the short fiber length, the sliver may break while weighing out the 25g and winding it to fit into the packaging. But I continue with the sliver so the colors continue without interruption.
Salt Spring Island colorways are hand-painted in Colorado. Our silks are colorfast (cold water wash) and our colorways are consistent. Hand-painting silk sliver is a labor-intensive process. It requires careful manipulation and effort to achieve even color coverage on silk sliver.
